UPDATE

For any of you who read in my blog about our dog being deaf...took him to the vet and he has an infection. After a visit to the vet and $178.00 later he has all sorts of meds and should regain his hearing.
Also...for every post that says the author is Miles...that's just me not watching what I was doing with my profile. Really-he's not posting...all me. He's not that dumb :)

THANKS-giving

Another Thanksgiving, a day to create
Delicious food to fill our plates.
The turkey was done on the day before
And no need for last minute trips to the store;
I was organized, not going to stress:
The menu -- no frills, minimal at best.
All was prepared, nearly everything done
Except the potatoes, being mashed by my son.
He said with chagrin, “Some pieces aren’t cooked.”
“I’m sure you’re mistaken”… and then I looked;
Yep, there were lumps, too hard to mash
My blood pressure rose, teeth started to gnash;
“Now what?” I asked, “What can we do?”
“It’s good enough Mom, it’s only a few,
And lumps give it character, no one will mind”
But give me a flaw, and more I will find.
I fretted, I fumed, my potatoes had lumps!
Here on Thanksgiving, life’s handing me bumps?
The glass half-empty was all I could see;
Then I pondered the problem, not potatoes, but me.
So the food wasn’t perfect, but it was fine, it was great;
We enjoyed one another, we talked as we ate.
I reflected I really have been greatly blessed
And I have to remember, even when stressed
That my life is so full, including the bumps,
And be thankful for all, even potatoes with lumps!:)

Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. We did, especially after I quit worrying about the lumpy potatoes. They were delicious anyway, especially with the gravy (which ALSO wasn't "perfect"). I particularly love all the visiting with one another after we've eaten.
JaNae and I were in Walmart in the wee hours of "Black Friday" morning trying to pick up stuff on her list. It was busy, packed, but not unpleasant. The Walmart employees were all so cheery...even the ones outside in the cold.

We have a sweet dog named Moroni...we call him Moni. He's 12 years old and I find he and I have increasingly more in common. We're both getting older and slower. We like naps and food and both have arthritis. And now, he seems to have lost his hearing too. Just in the last couple of days it has become obvious that he cannot hear us at all. Of course, I have hearing aids so I am not as bad off. I never realized how much dogs bond with us through our vocal contact. We are trying to remember to give him visual signals for "come" and "out" and to pet him more often. I'll need to call the vet tomorrow.

Okay, is Miles' blog more interesting? He has 6 followers (great-he likes that!)and I have one(thank you Kira). Sumthin's up ain't it?

I'm unique?? That's how you catch a rabbit, unique up on it.

You know how, when you're little, you think your birthday belongs to you-JUST you? Then somewhere around kindergarten you realize that there are only so many days in a year and LOTS more people than days and well, you aren't the only one with that birthday. I've met only a few people with my birthday, but just because I haven't met them doesn't mean they don't exist...I certainly expected that there were a lot but I had a little shock when I went to refill a prescription at Walmart this week. The clerk asked for my birth date, looked it up and said, "Jan Parker?" I was surprised and she told me, "Well, you're the only one with that birth date." I find it hard to believe that out of this city of 25,000 or the county (50,000)that I'm the only one using the Walmart pharmacy born on January 26th, 1953. I just think it's kind of bizarre anyway. I mean there ARE other people my age here. Just strikes me as strange.

Other news, we now have a rabbit. It's young, about 4 months old by our friend's estimation. Brice and Cian (JaNae's boys) were playing in our backyard Friday and ran in to tell us they saw a rabbit! Now, seeing rabbits around here isn't unusual...we often pull into the driveway to see one dashing back into the bushes next door at our approach... wild rabbits. In fact, the dog is always chasing them out of the pool area at night. So, when the boys said "Come see it Grandma", I'm thinking: "That rabbit is LONG gone now" but I say okay and go out. "See?" says Brice, pointing, "there he is!". Sure enough, the rabbit is still there, in some short weeds by the back fence sitting real still. We slowly approach and the little thing doesn't move even when we're only 3 feet away. JaNae comes out and we move to get a better look and the rabbit just sits there. JaNae remarks how pretty the coloring is and how it is surprising it hasn't dashed off yet. Then the rabbit kind of lops off behind some bigger bushes. JaNae and I figure that's the end of it. The next minute or so, Brice says, "There he is!" and sure enough he's on the lawn eating some mimosa leaves (the ONLY thing mimosa is good for). The boys inch toward the bunny and get about 2 feet from it before it runs off and goes under our shed. Then we all come in.
Later, getting towards dusk, Brice and Amry go outside the throw a ball around. She thinks she sees a cat out of the corner of her eye, but Brice tells her, "No, that's the bunny!" and they go over to investigate. They see what leaves it's eating and get more and offer it to the rabbit. He nibbles, they edge closer and they pet him. Then they run back into the house, "We pet the bunny! Come on, Grandma. Cian, you want to see?" (they woke him up from a nap). So, we all tramp out to the backyard and there he sits. Slowly we move towards him and I'm thinking , "Four of us closing in on him...he is going to bolt" but I'm wrong. They each give him a little pet, and then I reach down to pet him and then I just pick him up. He didn't fuss or fight and then just snuggled into my arms. OBVIOUSLY, this bunny has been a pet. We'll try to find out if someone has a lost bunny but meanwhile we borrowed a cage from some friends and got food, etc. for him. He's a very sweet and pretty animal. Jotty keeps reminding me he's only here TEMPORARILY...even though Jotty's the one that named him "Harvey". The cats are curious and the dog VERY interested.

Jotty had a rifle match last weekend. And I actually got to go! His girlfriend and her Mom were there too so I had someone to talk to. Jotty shot a 569 which isn't as good as he usually does. Still, he's 4th place in the conference. In a match, they shoot 3 positions (prone, kneeling, and standing) 20 shots per position. The garb they wear helps them stabilize their control of the rifle. The range he's standing is one of just a few of the electronic ranges in the nation...and is one of the things at the school that the tornado didn't touch. Of course they don't have high powered weapons in school. These are compressed air, pellet rifles. Jotty's is a Walther brand
Miles has been gone nearly 2 weeks so I expect to hear from him soon. Be sure to check out his blog if you haven't yet and be a follower so I know it's worth the time to keep it up. Feel free to leave comment too. Just click on his picture on the top right of this blog and it will take you to his blog (or... http://eldermilesparker.blogspot.com)

Farewell to Elder Parker

Sunday was our last night before Miles left for his mission. We had an open house for him at the church where a lot of ward members and his friends came to say goodbye. Miles is such a people person that it was hard on him. He has never had an easy time of goodbyes. I remember one time when Grandma and Grandpa Meservy came for a visit. Miles was about 7 years old and he just bawled when they left. We know he'll be fine but I know that a part of his heart breaks to say goodbye. He is excited to be going, and WANTS to serve the Lord, but he hates to leave us all behind...like most missionaries do. Miles and Jotty are the only kids in our family who were born and raised in this one ward...a lot of the (non-military) members say, "it seems just yesterday they were born",(or "in primary", or "in cub scouts", etc. Very few members have been here for more than 15 years.

Today, (Monday), Jim, Jotty and I took Miles to the Dothan airport. Also showing up were JaNae and her kids, Kira, Ben and kids, three of his friends-- Diane, Shelby, Jordan and Jordan's mom. I didn't cry because Miles and I got all our crying done late last night. It's such a selfish thing...I want him to go, we ALL do, but we cry because we're going to miss him. Jason and Michelle will drop him off at the MTC on Wednesday and then he REALLY starts his adventures! As we watched the plane depart, his friends shouted in chorus, "Hurrah for Israel!". They're all in seminary together so I assume it means something special to him.

Last Monday both Miles and Jotty (and another boy from their troop) received special recognition by Governor Bob Riley for their three Eagle projects which benefited the county DHR. There was also a Bar-B-Q in their honor. It was very nice and I think a cool thing to be able to put on an application or resume if the subject comes up.

On Friday- Miles, Jotty, and I worked at the Peanut Festival (an annual county fair event) at the stake Boy Scouts' Elephant Ear booth. What is an elephant ear you may ask? Well, it's a huge scone, topped with lots of cinnamon sugar. Our stake has had this booth for YEARS...first just one ward used to do it for budget money then later, when the financial framework of the church changed, it became a stake project for money for scouting. It's always an enjoyable night even if you are working, and you especially get to know people in your ward better. I think Jotty and I are supposed to go again this Thursday.

Saturday, Miles went on his last date with Diane...this time to the Peanut Festival to have fun. They also went to Olive Garden for dinner. She's a sweet girl who would like to get baptized but will probably have to wait until she's 18.

Keep up with Miles via his missionary blog, "Mission Adventures of Babylon, USA" the blog I will keep up for him with his emails, letters and pictures, while he is gone. Please be sure to sign up as a "follower" too. The site is: eldermilesparker.blogspot.com

Boo! Here I am! (For the two people who read this...)

Witch & Ghost I made a couple years ago.

Haven't blogged much because... well, just because

Getting Miles' stuff together for his mission, getting one illness or pain one right after another. (I mean really- flu, bronchitis, pinched sciatic nerve, sinus infection, vertigo...) back to work for the new school year, watching Nae's kids after school, taking Miles to B'ham temple for his endowment (always a great experience) and then junk, junk, and more junk.

Jotty is anxious for Miles to leave for only one reason-we will be able to insure him to drive when Miles is off of the insurance. Other than that-he's going to be lonely I think. Miles is his best friend. I'm going to miss the conversation...Jotty just doesn't talk as much (which can make for l-o-n-g car rides...even if it just the 40 minutes to Dothan).

The other day we were all over the place in Dothan...waiting nearly 2 hours in the county health dept for Miles to get his meningitis shot. ( They were the only place that had it...and for $113.00!!Not covered by insurance) Yes, even though he had meningitis at 3 mos---he still needed the vaccination. We also went to Sam's Club to pick up a few things, then visited Kira and the kids (they are too funny) then on our way home I remembered we still needed to get a copy of Miles' driving record. A hour and $5.50 later, he had a blank sheet of paper with the proper signatures and stamps that basically said he had no citations or accidents ---you know-clean driving record. He still needs to get a flu shot. Guess we'll go to Walgreens....

On other news it is darn chilly today, with breezes. Thursday we were wearing shorts and Tshirts and today I dragged out my jeans and tossed on a light jacket. Wonder what my plants will make of this drastic change? The poor gardenia has blossomed numerous times this last year. Just when I think it is done (all the old blossoms off, only greenery for awhile) here come new blossoms. I don't know if the mowing Jotty did this week was the last until spring...never know if this is a fluke and it'll warm up again or not. I am sure Jotty hopes so. Miles helped me weed the flower garden this a.m.---took a break from working on his talk for sacrament meeting tomorrow. Miles has been working for a landscaper this last month and a half. He comes home filthy dirty every day...yes, red clay in new garments. NOTHING has taken it out. I welcome any suggestions. Aaarrrggghhhh! Well, it's only 3 pairs and he's delegated those 3 to being the only ones for work.

My brother Mark called a few days ago to tell me that our brother Jotty has had renal failure. They gave him dialysis Friday. He has had urinary/prostate problems for the last year but doesn't go to MDs. He prefers to use herbs to heal everything. He did finally try Mark's "flomax" as opposed to continuing to self-catheterize. Then he got a prescription for it but didn't stay on it... as he "hates to support the big corporate pharmecutical companies". Consequently, he now has a leak or tear in his bladder and his kidneys have quit. His Dr said that he does not see Jotty's kidney function returning. Jotty is of the opinion that all doctors are only in it for themselves and that the herbal remedies will take care of everything as soon as he is out of the hospital. He also thinks the socialized medicine of Canada is great. So now, am I looking at outliving the health-nut of the family? (by the way-according to him-- marijuana is an herb).

Speaking of things that probably aren't good for you...I have a new addiction. Well, we ALL like it.... Tostito brand, Creamy Southwestern Ranch dip. Chip aisle-Walmart. I bought it on a whim when I bought tort chips for a road trip(to the temple). Now, I rarely buy prepared dips and I am not real adventurous when it comes to new food in jars or cans(fresh is a different matter)But, oh my goodness...this dip is de-lish!

See that empty jar? It's time to go to the store! Adios!

Miles' Mission Call

Yes, Miles got his mission call...finally. He is going to the Las Vegas, Nevada--Spanish speaking mission. He reports to the MTC on 4 November. He was hoping to be gone sooner but this at least allows him to work a couple of extra months. We figured he'd be assigned stateside since he has a CPAP machine but its "all good" as they say...he is thrilled that he will be teaching in Spanish! Our Bishop's son will be leaving the same mission (English speaking) right before Miles arrives there. I don't think their paths will cross.
Miles is working for one of the brethren in our ward doing yard work. His work day is about as long as Jotty's school day. He takes Jotty to seminary every morning and attends for the heck of it. As he says, you can't get too much of the Book of Mormon. I'm grateful he takes him so I don't have to get up so early (well, not until November anyway).

Jotty is doing the Ordeal for Order of the Arrow this weekend. I was sure it was going to rain Friday night when they slept "under the stars" but it didn't. He has been "tapped out" for Order of the Arrow before but his schedule never allowed him to go. This was kind of the last chance. In fact, we paid for him to go this last spring but then there was a shooting match so he couldn't go.
Oh yes, BY THE WAY, Jotty is commander of the Rifle Team!! There is a chance that he will be commander only half the year and then John the 2nd half of the year but it isn't definite yet. Not sure why the Master Sargent wants it that way but they just follow orders. :)

"Parker-Meservy Reunion" OR Can you believe we fit 45 people into this house?)

For those of you who don't know, we had a Parker-Meservy reunion from Thursday, July 30th to Tuesday, August 4th. It originated from JaNae's desire to see Grandma Meservy (Mom M). JaNae was going to fly out to California, but then thought, "If I bring Grandma out here, everyone can see her (meaning those who live in Alabama). Long story short, it ended up that EVERYONE wanted to visit with Grandma (well, she IS an awesome lady!) so the out-of-state kids all ended up traveling to Alabama as well.

Where did everyone stay; you ask? Well, cheap...*ahem...frugal people that we are...
Anna's family (of 8) traveled from the Augusta, Georgia area and stayed at JaNae's (no, I don't know where they put everyone---must've been magic). Jason's family traveled from Sacramento, California area and stayed in the basement apartment of Amanda's folks. Ian and Jessica (and their 2 Great Danes), from Mississippi, stayed in her folk's home here in Enterprise that hasn't sold yet, and Royal's family stayed with us, as did Mom. Jacob's family lives here in Enterprise and Kira's family lives in Dothan, about 45 minutes away. The reunion included Rick and Arline who live nearby in Newton and Arline's daughters' four kids who live in Dothan. Forty-five people in all. In our house. 'Nuf said.

There was lots of talking, swimming, and eating. LOTS of noise and laughter. We had tacos one night and I didn't think I'd ever be able to stop frying tortillas. On Saturday we had a barbecue and swimming after family pictures in the park (THAT was an adventure with all the heat and humidity!) We had a lot of help with the food-mostly from the guys that time. Jim was at the grill and he cooked about 50 burgers, 60 sausages/hot dogs and about 25 chicken breasts. We had a few sides as well and ate lunch, dinner, and leftovers the next day on all that. One of the meals was not at our house. It was in the apartment that Jason and Michelle were staying at, in the basement of Amanda's folk's home. I think Jim was off that night. The rest of the time, he "slept" during the festivities, and got up about 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. I think he might have finally used the ear plugs I gave him.

Every day of the reunion we had rain. Not just some sprinkles but storms. Nice thing about southern storms is that while they may spring up suddenly, they don't usually last all day. Some days we didn't have everyone here but the average count was about 40 people. Mornings were spent on their own and somewhere between noon and two o'clock they would start dropping by. Throughout the week, on various days, there was also games for the kids, a family home evening, and a trip to a small zoo. And of course swimming when weather permitted. There are lots of little "fish" amongst our grandchildren.

The zoo was a real hit. It is off the beaten path, but very enjoyable; in part because the owner, in his "down-under" accent, gives a very personal tour and tells you about each animal. There was also hands-on opportunity with the snakes. Some of the little ones surprised me with their lack of fear. I took lots of pictures but did not touch the snakes...nor did I run away, so I am improving. My favorite animal was the Ligers. I thought that ligers were only a "Napoleon Dynamite" thing (this is where you go "duh, Jan"). Wow, they are huge cats! There were also animals that visitors could feed and little goats running around. It was obvious that Mr. Mike, the owner, has a personal relationship with each animal. If you want to check it out here's a link: http://mikeszoocritters.com/index.html

Sunday was great, with most everyone attending our ward. The Bishopric noted our large family in attendance and Mom bore her sweet, strong, testimony and then a few more of us in the family shared their testimonies too. I love to hear the testimonies of our family members! After meetings Miles was ordained an Elder by the brethren of the family and a few friends. I am so glad that most of our family could be there at church...and that it wasn't for my funeral.

I will have better pictures when Stacy Thomas finishes her editing. She was so sweet to brave the heat and humidity with all of US to take pictures. She took hundreds! Thanks also to Kristy Rasmussen who was her "helper" and got the attention of the little ones (and some of the adults) with a cute bird puppet. Rick and Arline's puppy got everyone's attention when he took off with the puppet.

I want to thank all who came, all who helped. I know there were lots of sacrifices made for everyone to be here and I appreciate it. Many contributed to the food and fun and if tempers flared I only noticed it among the 12 and under group. I'm not saying that there weren't flaws in our planning or that I didn't get frustrated with food and water spilled on the floor. The two central air conditioners couldn't compete successfully with all the body heat and "close the door!" often followed the kids outside and many were driven crazy by our noisy bird. But despite minor problems, they were, in fact, really just little hiccups. No one slipped and broke anything, no one got sick, the toilets never got stopped up (in fact, we never ran out of t.p.) and we never ran out of food or conversation. Despite the crowded conditions in our living/dining area-I think everyone enjoyed themselves.

I am ever-so-grateful that Mom was able to come out to visit with us. We all love her so very much--what a wonderful matriarch we have! All in all, I think the reunion was a success. There is no way to fully explain what a great time we had and the memories that were made but I hope that each individual felt it was worth it. I'd love to do it again...I hope this is just the first of many.
How could I ever imagine many years ago, that my family would be this big; this awesome? The Lord has blessed me greatly!

P.S. Miles' mission recommendation was submitted last week so we should be hearing by the end of the month on where he will be assigned. Out here, other churches have "mission trips" that usually only last from a few weeks to a couple of months. People are surprised to learn he will be gone for 2 years. Maybe talking about his mission to others will open up missionary opportunities for us.

In the good ol' summertime...

Not that anyone reads these...but I know I need to blog again-- just in case. I need to get into the habit for when Miles is on his mission. Oh yes, his mission ''application" has been submitted. He will be ordained an Elder on Sunday.
I finished working the 4 weeks of "summer pre-school" right after Miles and Jotty went to EFY in Gainesville, Georgia. They LOVED it of course. Miles noted that the biggest difference between EFY and Youth Conference is the spirit felt there. He feels it is because all the kids are at EFY because they WANT to be there and unfortunately some go to Youth Conference because parents make them or because their friend is going.
The last day of summer work was the day I left to chaperone at Youth Conference in Troy. There were 6 stakes that participated in Youth Conference. Our stake hosted this year and there were about 900 youth. As far as our ward was concerned, our young men were obedient to rules. Two of the girls, however, were not and we were constantly looking for them because they would leave an activity and go off somewhere. Aaarrrggghhh! We weren't the only ward with errant youth though. For any kids who WANTED to be there, it was a good conference.
After Youth Conference we went to work on the yard. A lot of the overgrowth that we trimmed back last year returned of course. Despite 100 degree weather we made quick work of it and JaNae's kids even helped haul branches out to the front for pickup. Miles and Jotty also cleared our side yard (mostly weeds) and then Miles and I used wire and marked off our property line so we would know where to put a fence if we ever get to do that (not holding our breath). Our lawns are all trimmed AND edged and the flowers are looking pretty good. We hope we have finally eradicated the mimosa with this new stuff we sprayed and will be able to plant a veggie garden again next year. Anyone who's ever been down this way knows you can have a green yard without trying. Mimosa, kudzu, and stickery vines are plentiful and need no help in spreading. DRIVES ME CRAZY!
This week we've been working on the pool area. The boys trimmed the hedge back some and weeded, and we all worked on pressure-washing the 3 coats of paint off the concrete deck so we can paint it again. The pressure-washing is kind of like painting your house with a tiny brush-VERY slow-going. We tried to patch a spot in the concrete but we did an awful job. If bartering ever makes a comeback I will have to stick to sewing. Anyway, all the lattice has been cleaned, and also the backyard "porch" (slab). Miles worked his tail off digging a drainage ditch so that when it rains, the water won't pool around the back door (and leak in). We put rocks in the ditch too. Jotty vacuumed the pool-there were lots of paint flakes in it. We were going to paint the deck today but it rained almost all day so hopefully tomorrow. We've had this planned for quite awhile and would especially like to get it done before everyone comes for the "reunion" but the weather will have to cooperate. While they did a lot of the yard work last week, I spent time trying to situate each spare room so it would be comfortable for Mom M and Royal and family.
I HAVE TOO MUCH STUFF! Meanwhile, with all this going on, Jotty has had rifle practice every weekday morning AND the van died. We are fortunate to be able to borrow a friend's car. I fear the emergency fund is about to be sucked dry.
Well, time for bed. I will post a picture of Moni tomorrow-he went to the vet for shots and a haircut today. I swear he seems happier now.

The Spirit IN St. Louis

Elizabeth and Royal invited me to come to St. Louis last week for a visit and I jumped at the opportunity! Summer pre-school hadn't started yet so I wasn't working. Miles and Jotty were gone, so all I really had to do was re-work arrangements for JaNae's kids (I usually have them). I am so glad I went...I had a GREAT time! It was wonderful to see them again and enjoy their company and it was fun to be with Grace, Sienna, and little Jim. They have grown so much and of course, like ALL our grandchildren, are just too cute!
Since pictures don't do it justice, it was nice to see their home. It's a great place (including a large basement with lots of possibilities) in a nice, established (read: shade trees) neighborhood. I agree with Royal that there are entirely too many squirrels and rabbits running around though. Cute, but not if you want a garden.
Among other activities, I was treated to visits to the awesomely fun Botanical Gardens, the incredibly entertaining Science Museum, and the beautiful St. Louis Temple. I was particularly thrilled about going to the temple as Royal, Elizabeth, and I finally finished some important work. (okay, yes, it is all important but this was special for me). We sealed my parents, grandparents and great-grandparents and some children to parents. But for me, the best part was sealing ME to my parents. Talk about forever families! There is still much to be done, but I am delighted to finally have that particular ordinance done.
I definitely want to go back to St. Louis...maybe with Jim in tow next time-if he can arrange to be off. There are places in his "old stomping grounds" that he'd like to show me-but I've already told him I'll only observe the famous "Arch" from the ground-thank you very much! If you haven't visited St. Louis before...gotta try it. It is a city that has much to offer and is obviously rich in history. I can see why Royal, Elizabeth and Jim (dad) like it. I'm grateful that R & E gave me the opportunity and invitation to get a little "taste" of it...I'm going back for seconds!
About the slideshow: The cylinder thingy that Grace and Sienna are standing on squirts water out when you bounce on it. The water stream that Jim is grabbing for would shoot out of the ground randomly...he kept looking for them to pop up when he was near. None of the kids minded getting wet or water in their face. The tree pictured was a favorite of mine at the Botanical Gardens.

Eagle and Freedom

Well, it's done! We had Jotty's Eagle Court of Honor a week ago. It is exciting to me that ALL SIX of our boys achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. I am proud of all of them. Jotty is working on Eagle Palms and will be awarded his bronze palm in a few weeks. Jotty wanted to make sure we had the court of honor before they got started with all their summer activities. Congratulations Jotty!!

On another note, the week before, we were cleaned the garage and sorted through my "wedding supply shed". I quit doing weddings about a year ago for a few reasons: 1)my arthritis made it hard to do what I needed to do and 2) I didn't have anyone to help me. For example, before, if I couldn't climb up a ladder I always had one of the kids do it. I also had help loading and unloading the van. There was always someone around who could help but they all have their many responsibilities, the boys are "uber" busy and I think, really, I was tired of bridal drama. Sooo, time to get rid of stuff. And then there was the garage...stuffed with stuff I had to either donate, give away or sale. We had a yard sale and then I donated a bunch to goodwill and kept some wedding stuff...just in case (or to sale at a later date). Anyway, so the shed was mostly empty so we put the mower, edger, generator and ladders in. These pics will only mean something to those who have seen my shed and the garage. Think packrat nest or sardine can. What a great feeling to make so much room and get rid of stuff. What a sense of freedom!

Just something I forgot to post and an email from Anna reminded me. Her kids are in the play "Wizard of Oz" with their home school group and there is a quote from the script that I have always liked: "The heart is not judged by how much you love; but by how much you're loved by others." "Into the Woods" had two lines that impressed me: Little Red Riding Hood, after meeting the Wolf, concludes: "Nice is different than good". The other line I thought was interesting is from a (philandering) Prince: "I was raised to be charming, not sincere." Remind you of any politicians???

Into the World

Above is a picture of Miles and his best friend, Eric Todd. They have been friends since 5th grade, when the Todds moved to the area. Good kid, good family. Miles, Jotty and Eric hang out together a lot.
Anyway, graduation was great! Despite rain all week long, the day began nice and sunny. However, as we all gathered at the stadium (what is left of it) waiting for the students to start the processional, dark clouds started to roll in. As the students were lining up to enter the field, lightening began to flash so they sent the students back across the street to the nearby church where they had gathered earlier and announced a 20 minute delay for the storm to pass. As it began to rain we opened our umbrellas and waited. Sure enough, about 20 minutes later the rain stopped. The chairs were hurriedly dried off and 10 minutes later they brought the kids back, did the processional and started the graduation ceremonies.
All the speakers were good (guest speakers were the governor and one of the teachers whose daughter died in the collapse of the school-she would have graduated this year too) and no one was long-winded. In fact, no one was hesitant to refer to God and Jesus or to speak about what a great country we live in. (I'm kind of waiting to hear if the "word police" start a lawsuit over the "religious " parts). Of course, after all the speakers gave their addresses they got to the meat of it and started announcing graduates' names and handing out diplomas (covers). About half way through the alphabet, it started to sprinkle and the woman announcing names started to double-time it. Worked out fine, no one got rained on and she made up for the time delay earlier.
In our little group in the stands were Jim, Jotty and I. Jacob and Miles' Young Men's president showed up shortly after us and then we spotted our friends from Eufaula. (that's nearly a 2 hour drive to see a friend's kid graduate). So, Miles had a nice cheering section in our area. JaNae brought balloons to the stadium before she had to be to work and Anna called to give her best wishes. Afterwards, on the field with the graduates, we met up with some more friends from out of town who came. Then we left, and Miles went to a grad party at another friend's house. Eric doesn't like parties so he came over and played video games with Jotty. By 1:30 a.m. they were all pretty much tuckered out.
I cannot believe we only have Jotty left to graduate. In fact, it's hard to imagine Miles leaving on his mission in September. Yes, time DOES fly.
***to those wondering why we have graduation outside...even when rain is impending: there is no other place big enough to put nearly 400 graduates and their families and friends. Years ago, when there was an auditorium, if it was inclement weather they would hold it there and only the parents of graduates could attend. Until we have another auditorium or when the civic center is finished...it is outside or nothing. Had it continued to rain they would have moved graduation to the next morning at 10 a.m.
Hey! Happy graduation to ALL of the class of 2009!!!!

Ode to My Cat, Friday

"Cats, quite simply, defy explanation. Euclid's geometry can't appraise their curves. Newton's laws of rest and motion fail miserably. Volume isn't constant; even gravity is refuted by a frolicsome feline. These paragons of grace, paradoxical in nature, are subject to their own laws and heed only their own etiquette. To observe a cat is to witness a singularly surprising creation." -from The Artistic Cat
"There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats." Albert Schweitzer

"There is no need for a piece of sculpture in a home that has a cat." Wesley Bates

"If there is one spot of sun spilling onto the floor,
a cat will find it and soak it up." Joan Asper McIntosh

Last Tuesday afternoon, our 19 1/2 year old cat, Friday, died. By science's calculations, she was 72 years old. Friday was always on the small side due to being the runt of the litter but curiously, she was the only one of the litter to live past kittenhood. She was all cat of course...and then some. She disdained children until they were old enough to mind their manners around her, she unmistakably let you know if you pet her too far down her back, and woe be to the person who thought they could trim her nails or feed her a pill. HA!
I always felt she had a little Siamese in her...when she was younger she was always looking for the highest point to climb to and she had this little crook at the end of her tail that so many Siamese do. The picture of her above the window shows where she liked to be in her first year. (Do you know that a cat's first year is equal to 21 of ours? Then they age 3 for every one of ours).
But she was a faithful companion... and up until this last year, mostly slept with Jim during the day and with me during the night. She wasn't given to loud meowing (well, not after she was fixed anyway) or walking on counters and in her later years had the opportunity to prove what a good mouser she was.
I was with her at the end and glad that I could be there for her. While those who don't care for pets might not understand, know this: Friday was a member of our family. We are sad that she's gone, even though we know it was her time to go and that she had a much longer life than most cats. I feel that pets are a blessing from Heavenly Father and I hope I was a good steward. Goodbye dear friend.

"M" is for the many things we do....

Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms out there in blogland!

A friend sent the following to me and I wanted to share it. I couldn't verify exactly who wrote it though...

Before I was a Mom,
I made and ate hot meals.
I had unstained clothing.
I had quiet conversations on the phone.

Before I was a Mom,
I slept as late as I wanted and never worried about how late I got into bed.
I brushed my hair and teeth everyday.

Before I was a Mom,
I cleaned my house each day.
I never tripped over toys or forgot words to a lullaby.
I didn't worry whether or not my plants were poisonous.
I never thought about immunizations.

Before I was a Mom,
I had never been puked on, pooped on, chewed on, peed on.
I had complete control of my mind and my thoughts. I slept all night.

Before I was a Mom,
I never held down a screaming child so doctors could do tests or give shots.
I never looked into teary eyes and cried.
I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.
I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.

Before I was a Mom,
I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn't want to put her down.
I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn't stop the hurt.
I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much.
I never knew that I could love someone so much.
I never knew I would love being a Mom.

Before I was a Mom,
I didn't know the feeling of having my heart outside my body.
I didn't know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby.
I didn't know that bond between a mother and her child.
I didn't know that something so small could make me feel so important and happy.

Before I was a Mom,
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay.
I had never known the warmth,
the joy,
the love,
the heartache,
the wonderment
or the satisfaction of being a Mom.
I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much,
before I was a Mom.

Another friend sent me this link about me being Mother of the Year. Yeah, like THAT would happen hahahaha. Check it out anyway, it's cute.

I'd send it to all the Moms out there but I don't need the competition. :) Well actually I'm just too darn tired! Got home from the temple a short bit ago. Kids did baptisms and I did an endowment for Elizabeth Pathkiller a great great grandmother (not sure how many "greats") Kind of cool, yesterday was her birthday...217th to be exact. It is such a long drive!!! Goodnight everyone!

No chicanery at the cannery...

...just fun and work.
A good bit of Easter break was spent in the Enterprise Ward "cannery". Once again our ward borrowed a small dry pack canner from the Tucker Food Storage center in Atlanta. Our R.S. Provident Living sister, her husband and two others took a truck and trailer up there and brought back 1152 cans (3 pallets) and about 2,000 lbs of bulk food (according to the orders from ward members) and on Monday-Miles, Jotty, Jim and I helped set up the temporary assembly line, can our little bit of stuff and help others with whatever they were doing...ward members did nearly 500 cans of food Monday! Tuesday, the boys and I went back and helped again and on Saturday, I went back and helped with the last of it. There is only 150 cans left for people to use up this next week. We need to continue to add to ours, but for the first time I feel confident in our food storage and feel that we are being obedient to the counsel of the prophets. Not only that, but it is finally organized too! We enjoyed the work!

Easter Sunday, Miles was finally awarded his Duty to God (coin?/medal?). We're pleased that he was able to complete both that and his Eagle. Now his mission is on the horizon...right behind the school play, graduation, working at Scout camp, Youth Conference, and EFY. With the exception of graduation, Jotty has the same activities and then he's a senior?? Yikes!

This last weekend, Jotty went to Staff Weekend at the Scout camp and Miles had his last drill competition. Jotty's weekend was blessedly uneventful for the most part. For Miles, his last year on the drill team ended well: The team got a couple of 1st and 2nd places and 1st place overall AND Miles and a teammate got 1st place in a dual exhibition! Miles had wanted to do one all year but MSG wouldn't let him until this last competition as he didn't want Miles distracted from his commander responsibilities. Most commanders don't participate in individuals or duals. Anyway, Miles has reason to be happy with this last competition.

Remember that pile of mending? Well, I am almost done with it, though I am beginning to think some nasty gremlin sneaks in at night and puts yet another thing on the pile, as it has taken forever to whittle it down. What I really dislike is the mending item that sits there on the heap and says "yep, you don't remember what you were gonna do to me eh? yea, well, you're gonna have to search 'cuz I'm NOT tellin' you". Then I have to remember who it belongs to as well. See? This doesn't happen to procrastinators...let that be a lesson to you. I also got Mary Ann's Easter dress done(only 2 years late). Now to catch up on other "projects" (haha) but FIRST I really need to reorganize the sewing room...if I can maintain the energy. Being off work this last week was awesome and I really hate to go back. I DO want to finish stuff that's been nagging me. See, I have forty plus years of photographs that are NOT, in the least bit, organized. Just the thought of all that work sends me comatose but it HAS to be done. And whaddya bet somewhere there's another little gremlin waiting for a chance to create more work? No offense to all you good gremlins out there, it's just that some of you can't be trusted.
Goodnight to all.

Parenthetical Particulars

Today is officially the first day of Spring Break. Miles and I started it by not going to bed until almost 4:00 a.m! Prom was last night and I don't go to bed until everyone is home. (I do nap on the couch however) Miles called when the dance was over (midnight) to ask if they could go to Waffle House (yes). Then called again later to ask if they could go to the big city park(no), so they wandered around Walmart for awhile (Really, there is nowhere else to go). When he came home he was jazzed and wanted to talk about his date so we did (good thing I'd had a nap). Diane is the girl he wanted to take to the military ball but she had a date already. He almost decided against going to Prom but now he's so glad he went! Before the dance they went to a Japanese place for dinner with 3 other couples and had a blast! ("Mom, I have got to take you there!")

Meanwhile, earlier in the evening, (after Miles brought Diane over so I could take a picture)Jim, Jotty and I went to Dothan. I dropped Jim off at the stake center for a General Priesthood meeting, then went to Sam's club to pick up a couple of things (Jotty napped in the car), then we drove to the Scout office (on the outskirts of town) for Jotty's Eagle board of review. (I was going to wait in the car but decided to go in and sit. When they called Jotty up they asked if I wanted to go in too since his Scoutmaster couldn't be there...cool experience). When Jotty was done we drove back into Dothan where I droppped Jotty off to catch the last part of the meeting (he missed Jim's talk). Meanwhile, I drove over to Kira's old house and dropped off a few things for her (I don't know where their new place is), then I scrounged around in my purse and found a partially used Visa gift card, (checked the balance) and drove to Checkers to pick up a couple of burgers for us to eat on the way home, went back to the stake center to pick up Jim and Jotty, talked to Jacob in the parking lot for a few minutes, then drove home so Jim could quickly change and leave for work. Whew. It really sort of felt like the "old days" when more kids were home and we were "goin' ninety to nothin" (whatever that means) with all our activities.
Speaking of activity, I don't hear any yet from the boys and there is plenty to do around here before they go to a stake dance tonight. We'll see if I have enough energy to get anything accomplished today.

Meanderings of an unsound mind...

It was a BEE-OOO-TI-FUL day Saturday!! Not too warm, not humid and with a slight breeze. Jotty had ACT exams in the a.m., so Miles and I worked around here a bit and when Jotty got home we ate lunch and went over to Kira and Ben's. Miles and Jotty did the mowing and weed-eating and removed a bunch of huge banana tree roots while I stained their front door (which Ben had already sanded), and a couple other little things. Ben and Kira were busy with other painting, jobs, and the kids. We got home in time for M & J to get cleaned up for the priesthood session (and the pie and ice cream beforehand). Good thing it wasn't too hot yesterday, we found out the AC on the van isn't working. Hope it just needs freon.
Meanwhile...
I started working on my ever-present mending pile. It never seems to go away...it might if I just did mending for us but most of my mending/alterations is for other people. Don't ask... I guess I just can't say no. When the kids were young, if something stayed in the mending pile too long they outgrew it and it became a non-issue. Now, my grandkids are outgrowing things before I get them mended! The big drawback is that I have this stupid little "rule" for myself...until I finish the mending pile, no real sewing (you know, actually constructing a garment). Not that I could do much real sewing right now anyway...the sewing room looks like a goat exploded!! Let's see, re-organizing the sewing room was a New Year's resolution...and it is now April. Yep, go ahead and look in your copy of Webster's...see that picture next to the word "procrastinator"? It's ME!
It quit raining Friday and Saturday but started raining again today between sessions (wasn't conference great?!) Now, we're under a tornado watch until 1 a.m. One good thing about our tornado room, it's also our food storage room. I need to remember to put a can opener in there..., Yes! yes, that's the ticket! I'll do it right after I clean the sewing room! (hahahahahaha)

Ever hear of the Broadway production, "Into the Woods"? by Steven Sondheim? Well, I hadn't, but now I have. The high school is doing the play and last week a few of the cast members approached Miles and said that the director would like him to join the production to do one of the lead parts. He was thrilled...and will play the Baker. Then a few days later, Jotty asked if there were any parts left and he is now the narrator. Miles is especially jazzed as he has wanted to be in one of the school productions but he never heard about the auditions in time to prepare something OR an audition was on a day when they had a competition. He's also glad the part is for a baritone and not a tenor.

I know where the bumble bees are...

Spring has definitely sprung! The wysteria and azeleas are in full bloom. This wysteria is right outside the kitchen window and I thought I'd share it with all of you.

Guns and Roses

We went to the Rifle Team banquet with Jotty the other night. Jotty was surprised to find out that he not only got a medal for being on the Championship Team (there are 10 schools in the conference) but also earned the 6th place Individual medal which placed him on the All Conference Precision team (the six best shooters of the conference, regardless of what team they are on)...that's out of about 100 shooters. I know he wishes he could have a rifle of his own but the precision rifles are very expensive. Anyway...Go Jotty!
Today we worked on the yards. After the rain we had last week the weeds sprouted in leaps and bounds and we suddenly had some 3 foot high weeds among others. We removed a lot of weeds before mowing but we definitely need to weed and feed this year. The boys worked on the lawns (I use the term loosely...it probably is mostly weeds that we keep trimmed down so they look like grass) and I weeded the garden in the front. While gardening I remembered a poem that I memorized in grade school many years ago:
"A kiss of the sun for pardon;
A song of the birds for mirth;
One is nearer God's heart in a garden,
Than anywhere else on earth"
I think I understand the author's feelings...while I worked rather automatically removing the unwanted weeds and leaves, I pondered things and talked to Heavenly Father. I fall asleep so easily when I kneel down at night for prayer--but not while I'm weeding the garden...so the communication is bound to be better.
I have a few "wild roses" in the back and two puny roses in the front. I think I just neglect them too much. I like plants that don't have to be babied and are happy getting their water when it rains. The azaleas are blooming now and I weeded very carefully around a volunteer berry plant by the mailbox. Maybe this year I'll plant some new perennials? I still need to move one of the gardenias that is NOT happy where it is.
Working in the garden is also bittersweet. I miss my Mom the most when I am working in the yard. I used to call her and ask her about certain plants or tell her about a success I had with one in particular. Last year when my agapanthus (Lily of the Nile) had several blooms at once, my first thought was, "I've got to tell Mom about this!" She had such knowledge about plants too! I like to garden, when my body doesn't resist too much, but Mom LOVED to garden. Maybe she did it in part because when she was gardening we'd leave her alone in case it would mean work for us also. Mom M has a green thumb too...so it isn't like I don't have anybody to talk gardening with---it's just a bond I had with my mother, particularly when I didn't live near her anymore. I wish she could have seen this place and made suggestions for landscaping...I do not have that knack.

Update

How y'all doin'? Sorry it's been a while, I didn't write mainly because I already had Mom telling about all the stuff that happened ...
Anyways, so yeah in January, Miles and I went to the Military Ball with the girls of our choice. At first I really didn't think that Katie would want to go because from June of last year up to the Ball, she had been taking some meds for her ADD that really changed her, by that I mean that she ignored me a lot and was kinda annoyed that I wanted to be around her. Mom and Miles eventually convinced me to just email and ask her, and her answer surprised me (she said yes with 12 exclamation points). She really liked the Ball because the one in Eufala (where she lives) was nothing compared to ours (while we were in a fancy ballroom with expensive utensils and what-not, they were in a concrete-floored gym with paper plates and sporks). And just recently something happened that took her off of the meds so she's back to the way she was before. When I went up to Ohio, as we were coming back, we had a lot of time to just run around and do whatever, so as I was going around I passed a boutique and something caught my eye, it was a beautiful necklace with a heart that had some shiny stones on it and earrings to match. I just stood there staring at it for who-knows-how-long. Finally my coach and his wife passed by and she noticed what I was looking at and asked me if I had gotten anything for my girlfriend for Valentines Day. I've never cared much for Valentines Day, but I realized that her birthday was March 14, not too far away, and I didn't have a present for her. I bought the necklace for $10, interesting, huh? So just recently I went to her sweet sixteen party (she invited me as soon as I got back from Ohio) and when she opened my present, it took her breath away. Yeah, she was happy, and I was happy because she was happy.
So, on to Rifle Team. Right now I am tied for second best shooter on the team (the best one is a senior, so is the one I am tied with ... and the one that I shoot better than) I can't wait for coach to appoint the next Rifle Team Commander. The way I figure it is this:
There are six juniors on the team; Whitney Chancelor, Andrea Gee, Shaun Crosby, Chase Carter, Jonathan Roberts, and myself. I know that he won't choose Whitney because this is her first year and he has already discussed her problems (not really complaining, more like informing because she does have a lot of problems with her health). Shaun ... well, he's already gotten in a lot of trouble with Coach, and everyone knows that he's just incapable of holding any kind of responsibility. Chase has already told everyone that he doesn't want to be Commander. Andrea isn't at practice a lot, and Coach doesn't like that. That just leaves Jon and me. Jon and I are almost exactly alike in how we think the team should be run, how responsible we are, how capable we are, etc., etc., and so forth. The only difference between Jon and I is that I am more outgoing and social than he is. I also have a good relationship with the entire team; I try to lead, be a friend, and I try to help everybody when they are down and keep everybody up. Coach and I also have a good relationship going, not as in, like, I slip some money under the table or something, we just talk a lot about what the team needs to do, and I'm pretty sure that he sees things the way that I do and that I am probably the best candidate for Commander. I think everyone else would support me as Commander, as far as I know.
Well, I think this is the longest post I have ever done, wish me luck everyone!
This is Hawkeye, signing out.

Oh, yeah, and I forgot to mention that I almost have my Eagle, I just need MILES to sign up for environmental science merit badge counselor, sign off the rest of the requirements, and then I need my board of review and everything.

I love a good sale!

In December, just down the street from us,they built a Dollar General store. It's nice and convenient...especially if you just need one or two grocery items. So, I went to Dollar General the other day to check for one thing and thought I'd check the clothes because I was sure I saw a clearance sign. Sure enough, a portion of the clothes were marked 70% off. Great! I bought two white dress shirts (for Miles and Jotty) for $2.40 apiece and a couple of "Fisher-Price" baby outfits for the same price(we're having a baby boom at church). Can't get them from the thrift shop that cheap!
The next day I thought "Duh! I ought to get more shirts for Miles, 'cause he'll need them for his mission and I can't beat the price."
I went back and guess what? I COULD beat the price! The sale rack was marked down to 90% off! I ended up getting all the shirts he'll need for .80 cents each! I also got him two pair of jeans at 1.20 each. Yeah, I got more baby outfits too at .80 cents and 1.20 each.
Now, if I could only find suits for Miles at that kind of markdown...

What's This White Stuff?

WOW! We got snow! Okay, technically it is snow, and it has snowed off and on all day. However, in my opinion, for it to really count it ought to stick enough to be able to make a snowball. That isn't happening here. The last time it snowed enough here to build a snowball was in 1993. At any rate, it is enough to make you want to cuddle up in a warm blanket and sip hot cocoa...so we are!

No valid excuse...

I don't know why I can't just sit down and blog... I am too O.C.D. for one... I hate having any mistakes and am afraid of sounding like a blithering idiot! (okay, I hear you out there, ..."she ought not to blog at all then" ) I mean I try hard to NOT sound like an idiot. Of course, when I don't blog for a long while I miss commenting on some things around here...which isn't necessarily a bad thing for you who might read this. Ah yes, so much for my blog "doubling" as a journal; well, I have always been more than adequately bad at that too. Okay, maybe I will just hit high points and (maybe) add pics to fill it out. (I heard that too, ..."her epithet will read 'Her life was only high points'...") Anyhoo...

December: Had a great time with all the family that we were able to see. Royal and Jason and their families didn't come this Christmas and we missed them lots. It was nice to have everyone else though. One day everyone came over and the grown-up "kids" fixed a big brunch for everyone. For those who've never seen my kitchen, 3 or 4 adults in its little space is nigh on impossible if they are all cooking! I didn't have to do anything but visit and take pictures. The day was warm and the kids played (and fought) outside for the most part. The funniest thing was Wayne teaching the others to throw "bombs" off their "fort"; complete with sound effects. The fort is a kind of plastic jungle-gym thing we got for Miles and Jotty 15 years ago (and is still in good condition) and the "bombs" were empty 10 gallon water barrels. It was such a hoot! I'll be sure to post a picture on Wayne's return visit when the water barrels will be full :) I kind of hate to spoil his fun but it will be fun to watch the first reaction.

Though our home is akin to a sardine can when the crowd is here, it is always nice to have them and we had a delightful time!

We also had a ward talent show/Christmas party and both boys participated. Miles did a rifle drill, Jotty played 3 piano pieces (he memorizes them) and both sang a song with the Elders. Here's a link to the latter if you're interested:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx81Xqk71DE

December also saw JaNae in the hospital for a few days getting 4 (FOUR) pints of blood. She had surgery last week. She scared us and it was, I think, only her inspiration that had her come over and then have me take her to the ER. I shudder to think what might have happened if she hadn't come over because she wasn't "feeling right". She is recuperating well; her Dr even commented to me that she was "tough as nails".

January:Jason, Michelle and Mila came for a visit and to pack up their stuff in storage for their permanent move to Sacramento. We had a nice, but too short, visit. We scheduled Miles' Eagle Court of Honor to coincide with their visit so he'd have both Jason and Jacob in the "Eagle's Nest". It was a nice ceremony and far more people came than I'd expected. We kept having to put out more chairs and ended up with about 90 attending. I was certain that we wouldn't have enough refreshments. Don't people eat dinner before they come to these things? (Oh, a friend of ours made some crackers (well, seasoned some crackers) that were divine! I'll get the recipe and post it) We should have had the court of honor when in October, but then I was looking at up-coming holidays, calendaring, etc and we decided to wait. Also in January, I turned 56 (whoopee), Miles got his license (had to have his Eagle first) and Miles & Jotty took their favorite girls to the annual Military Ball. They sure looked sharp! I can't believe these are my "babies"- where did the time go?

February, Miles had another JROTC drill competition this month. They've done fairly well this year but he hadn't much to work with as there were mostly first-year cadets. February, they won first place in Demilitarized Exhibition (that's the fancy drill-work with their rifles), 1st place in color guard and 1st place of the Army JROTC teams. They got 2 or 3 other awards but not 1st places and I don't remember which categories. Jotty and I drove up to Montgomery to watch and were amazed at all the schools there; lots from out of state too. This competition was the largest one-day invitational competition. The team probably won't go to Daytona for the "mama of all competitions" because they just aren't as polished as they need to be...and so Sgt Major said they aren't going. They probably have just one more competition.

Jotty was chosen as 1 of only four from the rifle team who went to the Army Regional JROTC National Rifle Competition in Ohio this month. He was excited just to be going and did well but didn't place. He did score a perfect 200 in his second prone set. He also got to experience snow for the first time! In '93 it snowed here (stay-on-the-ground type snow) but he was too young to enjoy it. They have one rifle match left this year.

Maybe I will update in another week or so. Don't hold your breath.
